Aims

At St Joseph’s our aim is to encourage all children to enjoy and achieve in all areas of the curriculum. Within physical education we aim to give them the opportunity to:

  • develop physical competence and to explore physical skills with increasing control and co-ordination.
  • develop problem solving skills and the way they apply rules for different activities.
  • develop inter-personal skills by helping them to become aware of their role as team members.
  • develop personal qualities of commitment, fairness and enthusiasm.
  • recognise and describe how their bodies feel during exercise.
  • understand strengths and be aware of weaknesses of both themselves and others in relation to different activities.

At St. Joseph’s we understand the importance to develop the children’s knowledge, skills and understanding, which is done through a mixture of whole class teaching and individual/group activities.

Active Lunch Times

A range of sports and playground equipment are brought out during lunchtime to encourage all children to be active and participate in activities and games. Year 6 pupils have received ‘Jumping Jaxx’ training where they will support the younger children in playing games, teamwork and use the equipment correctly and safely.

After school clubs

Many after school sports clubs are run throughout the year such as football, tag rugby, hockey and netball. These encourage children to further develop their skills in a range of activity areas. The after school clubs are run by both our School’s Sports Coach and other professionals from local Sports facilities.

School Sports Partnership

Our school is supported by the Burntwood and Lichfield Schools Sports Partnership. This entitles us to a range of training courses and cluster school activities for groups of children to participate in. This widens their experience of competing against other teams and enables them to participate in a range of organised sports activities including football, netball, rugby, athletics, dance, gymnastics and ‘multi-skills’ sessions. We also compete in Inter House Competitions within school where the children compete within their houses in sports such as dodge ball, bench ball, cricket.

Sports Day

This is a fantastic opportunity for the children to show what they have been learning during their Athletics sessions in PE. All children are given the opportunity to compete in a number of different competitions and compete in their house colours. EYFS and KS1 competitions take place in the morning and KS2 competitions take place in the afternoon, with the results for each house being announced at the end of the day.

We hope that providing these opportunities for the children to take part in a variety of sports will allow them to continue their journey on becoming physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. As a school we are aware of the importance and encourage children to take part in opportunities to compete in sport and other activities to help build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect. Introducing them to the variety of sports ensures they are also ready for the expectations of the PE curriculum in KS3.
